VISIT TO SHILPUR,GOSHAIGAO
LINE SWING METHOD OF PLANTING...

 PADDY FIELDS OF SHILPUR

We went another Santhal village called silpur which is situated at the north of Gosaigoan. We went to see the livelihood project run in the village

Swing line paddy cultivation

It is a sophisticated method of cultivation. NERSWN gave training to local farmers to cultivate their paddy in SWING LINE method in which paddy has to be cultivated with a measurement and you suppose to maintain a distance of 10 inch between two crops. The above pic is clear illustration of the cultivation. A rope is used while planting the crop.It has to be done in a particular way. Once done well it will also give good results.

Some benefits of this method are; -

The swing line method helps to plant the crop in an organized way, rather than cluster and crowded
It looks organized and easy to weed
The yield is also more than the other method of cultivating.
The plant has enough space to grow so it gives more yield.

Reflection

In spite of good results and continues training not many are using this method of cultivation. People still use the old way of cultivating so there are very few who this method.
We interviewed a few of the farmers who used the swing line method and they were happy with the results and gave a positive report about it.
The organisation is trying their best to have good results and they are trying to create models so that others can take lessons from it. Many people have been benefiting from it as their income has increased and people have more to eat as well as sell in the market.

It is an ongoing project and the NGO is hoping to replicate in many other parts of  Kokrajhar district.
