Towards a change:  An inspiring story of Nirmali Murmu

NIRMALI MURMU

Nirmali Murmu, a Santhali woman from Silpur village of Gossaigaon says that her life has taken a turn which inspires many other Santhal women in her village. She believes that it is possible because of NERSWN. Many case studies and documentary have been made on her life.

NIRMALI MURMU'S HOUSE

In Assam, rice is meant to be the staple food and every house depends on it for livelihood. NERSWN came out with the plan to increase the productivity of rice so that farmers who cultivate rice sustain themself by utilising rice for their own and the rest to be sold in the market and this leads to an economic upgradation on the life of the farmers. They reached out to Nirmali Murmu with the idea of 'Line Sowing Cultivation', in which the production of rice is increased to a much higher level. She accepted it and tried on her field. And yes, it worked, the production of rice increased. Now, she seems to be financially much stronger than before and with the help of it she is able to send her children to english medium schol for their education. She is nominated as the Community Resource Person(CRP) of NERSWN in her village.

NIRMALI'S KITCHEN

When I met her, she narrated an incidence which really inspired me to be selfless for your own people. Once there was an emergency in her village where there was conflict between the Bodo communtiy and the Santhal community. People came out in anger on the road and destroyed the fields, school and many houses. It was declared as emergency and were taken to nearby army camps. On returning back to village, the school building was destroyed and so it was planned to send the children to the school which is in town and seems to be far from the village. Nirmali raised her voice and kept her concern for the children as how is it possible to send the children to study to such a far place. And on the spot she declared to give her land for the school and soon there constructed a small building and children started going to school. After some days, the government officials called Nirmali and her husband concerned about their land and the school. They handed over the school building to Nirmali and her husband which was constructed on their land and the children were sent to the previous school which got repaired soon.

One has to learn to be selfless in their doings and Nirmali Murmu sets to be an example of inspiration to her community and other people too.
