SIDHOKANAH  SCHOOL - A SCHOOL WITH DIFFERENCE.


Our Assam diary needs a special mention of Sidhokanah school, Shrirampur,Gossaigaon.  The school is located in open fields of Shrirampur, almost 10 k.m. from gossaigao. The has an humble beginning and it has been catering mostly to the tribal students of this locality.  Whats is so new about it? As many of the school do cater to tribal students. But Sidhokanah school is different. The 340 odd students who study here are tribal but many of them are school drop outs and are those who cannot afford English medium education.

GENESIS


 Mr. Vinod Marandi the founder of the school started the school for those who cannot afford English medium education. Vinod himself who got an English medium education by the missionaries was inspired by their sacrifice and hard-work for the tribal community. Vinod had many job offers since was well educated but after working for sometime in a good English medium school as a teacher he saw the plight of the poor student who were not able to cope with the studies in the school. 

SIDHOKANO SCHOOL IS NOT LIKE ANY OTHER SCHOOL. THE SCHOOL TAKES STUDENTS WHICH ARE DROP OUTS OF OTHER ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOLS IN THE LOCALITY. THE MAIN AIM OF THE SCHOOL IS TO PROVIDE ENGLISH EDUCATION TO UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS WHOSE PARENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO AFFORD ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL EDUCATION.
MR. VINOD MARANDI AGE 35, IS DOING THIS REVOLUTIONARY WORK SINCE 2012, WHO STARTED THE school with the idea of affordable English education for tribal children. He worked very hard to start the school and to gather the initial support. He had to go through a lot of hardships and a lot of difficulties but soon he over came all this and now he has 356 students coming from more than 12 villages and hamlets. He has been working day and night to give best available to these children. He also has hostel where more than 100 children are provided with accommodation and food at the cost of 250. 

He and his wife are working round the clock taking care of these children. I was highly touched and surprised by this young man who in such young age has devoted his life for tribal children. His efforts are bearing fruits as children are able to converse in good English and they are moving towards a great future.  A lot difficulties do stand in front of him and future of the school is also a big question as finance and other resources are limited and scare but his determination to do something for the tribal children is a great inspiration to many of us. We wished him all the best and kept moving towards  new social ventures..

'Assam Diaries'  A  Beginning To Explore                  Diary is a wealth of our memories. It is not only a bunch of documentation but also it is a very important for self reflection. As a student of social work we are placed at Assam for our fieldwork. It is a great opportunity for learning and understand about the society and it's reality. In the medium of this field work we are starting our new journey of social consciousness. But in this process self reflection is very essential for us. RAJBANSHI Rajbanshi man wearing traditional Rajbanshi attire        The  Koch Rajbongshi (Koch) , also known as  Rajbanshi, Koch Rajbanshi, Rajbanshi  are an ethnic group inhabiting parts of Assam, ,, northern West Bengal  and some pockets on the eastern parts of Nepal , Bihar , Bhutan  and northern   Bangladesh. They are recognized as OBC  in the state of Assam  as Koch-Rajbongshi and SC  in the state of West Bengal  as Rajbanshi. They are spread mainly in the districts of Cooch Behar , Jalpaiguri , Uttar Dinajpur , Dakshin Dinajpur  and the plain lands of Darjeeling  in West Bengal ; Goalpara  and Dhubri districts  of Assam; and Rangpur  and Dinajpur  districts  of Bangladesh. Substantial amount of Rajbanshi population can also be found in the Malda districts  of West Bengal, Purnia district  of Bihar and the Jhapa district  of Nepal.  While our stay  in  Gossaigaon for fieldwork,    there was two  days bandh   declared by the Rajbanshi   community.
